Folic acid contributes to the development of maternal tissues (e.g. placenta, embryo, etc.) and normal amino acid synthesis during pregnancy. Supplementing with folic acid increases maternal folate intake. Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for the development of a developing foetus with an anterior fetal septal defect.

The Seventy-sixth World Health Assembly (WHA), held on 29 May 2023, addressed, among other issues, the increasing prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in the world.
Deficiencies of vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid, iron, vitamin A and zinc, affect 50% of all pre-school children and 67% of women of reproductive age worldwide. Micronutrient deficiencies can have serious consequences, including spina bifida and other neural tube defects, which are a serious risk during pregnancy and during fetal development. In addition, they can also seriously hinder pregnancy.
The resolution was agreed in the framework of the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025).
